Lessons in Leadership | Maintaining Clear Accountability

Thursday, November 19, 2026 at 12:00 PM until 1:00 PMEastern Standard Time UTC -05:00

Accountability is a shared responsibility, not just something a leader imposes on a team through high expectations and repeated tasks. Join us for the next session of Brown University's Lessons in Leadership series with Ed Barrows, professor of the practice of leadership and academic director of the master's in organizational leadership, as he explores "Maintaining Clear Accountability."

The second of two skills in the teams section of Barrows' new book, "Twelve Skills for Teams," this session focuses on making sure tasks and performance expectations are met by the team as a whole and by each person on it. When expectations are vague, deadlines slip and frustration builds. When every team member understands what they own and holds themselves and their colleagues accountable, teams work more effectively and build greater trust.

During this session, you'll learn how to:

    • Set clear performance expectations for the team and for each team member

    •  Define ownership so the right people are responsible for the right work

    •  Build peer accountability so follow-through doesn't depend on the leader alone

    •  Address missed expectations directly, fairly and constructively

You can view all of Barrows' sessions in the Lessons in Leadership series on our YouTube channel.
